about

"Hello Antenna" is the first Susie Asado Album. It is about Antenna, about the listening to the universe and hearing stories and sounds. It is about Mexico and the crossing of borders. It is about constructing a home and living in that construction. But most of all it is about becoming Susie Asado. Hello.

about

Susie Asado Berlin, Germany

Susie Asado lives in Berlin. That is the band, not the poem. The poem is by Gertrude Stein. Yes, there is such a poem. The band is not a poem. It is a band. Josepha writes the songs. She takes this very seriously, as she takes the band very seriously and of course the poem, that is Gertrude Stein very seriously. ... more

Track Name: This Is My Adress
This Is My Address

come into my house and see how
I've arranged the cables wrapped in
neat piles and folded the napkins and sorted
screws and took a hammer to my
walls and hung some pictures
as if I had just moved in, but I've been -- living here for years
and I'm not sure if I'm meant to stay
I've been living here for years
in a temporary sort of way

come into my house and see how a
door makes an entrance and a sofa a living
room a bed a bedroom
and a pillow and a blanket would you like to join me
in pretending a home pretending I live here
as I boil some water as if -- I've been living here for years
and I'm not sure if I'm meant to stay
I've been living here for years
in a temporary sort of way

come into my house it is a real house
with a green floors and running
water and a gas furnace to keep it
warm this is no doll house, this is
life-size this is a refrigerator and elec-
tricity and china I have china and polka dot
glasses they are from the twenties and they are
not even chipped --I've been living here for years
and I'm not sure if I'm meant to stay
I've been living here for years
in a temporary sort of way

come into my house I just vacuumed all the
corners as if vacuuming could make corners could make
floors could make a room and
rooms could make and an apartment and
an apartment could make a home could mean
I live here "this is my address"
with a doorbell and a slot in my door for
mail you can send me letters do send me letters
Track Name: Ancient History I
Ancient History I

the dinosaur returned to the city
he is waiting at the train station
his tail is suspended in the air
and his story reduced to a skeleton

he is waiting to be taken to the museum
where they preserve fragments of things passed
I wish I could take your bones there
and arrange them the way they once were

I would curate an exhibit on heartbreak
a smorgasbord of carefully selected artifacts
I would call it ancient history
and let visitors fill in the gaps

between a toothbrush and a pineapple
between the smell of carmel and an automobile
between a forest and a photograph
of lovers attempting a waltz
Track Name: Another Geography
Another Geography

you can brush the dust off your coat
but you can't hide you've been traveling for a long time
you can dance in the rubble of your broken heart
but you can't hide you've been dancing for a long time

so go and paint your face you will look pretty
birds are watching waiting for the kill
you might as well go out in bright daylight
you might as well turn your papers in

you can try and get across the border
tell them that it's been your home for a long time
you can tell the officer that you love him
you can touch him with your blue eyes

you can spill the contents of your suitcase on his table
and why you couldn't make up your mind
you can give him a lessen in geography
tell him why Mexico is not in Mexico after all

Mexico is right behind you
Mexico has been sending you mail
Mexico is the place you will return to
Mexico is the place you've never been

so go and paint your face you will look pretty
birds are watching waiting for the kill
you might as well go out in bright daylight
you might as well turn your papers in
turn your papers in
Track Name: Hello Antenna
Hello Antenna

hello antenna the weather is pleasant
even though it's winter and the ducks have to petal
to keep the water water
and their minds off the cold
you told me that there is no such thing as bad weather
it's not the winter that is freezing but the jacket that is thin
you told me that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree
and i wish I had your eyes because they are so very pretty
with little black dapples
with little black dots

your father he was short and he had your eyes
he was precise about everything especially chopping chives
your mother liked stories about the royal family
and she knew every detail as if it was her family
and she made hot chocolate with real chocolate
and she added sugar to make it sweet
sweet sweet sweet sweet sweet

I hope you like this song
because I could not find a proper present at the store

I walked in the store
looking for
something suitable
for an elegant woman like you
I looked around
found this and that
but nothing that could match
the tricks you've got up your sleeve
you make water boil
on a cold plate
and you wear a tiger suit
that could scare a lion out of his pants
you know everything
as if you had antenna
on every roof top high-rise car train helicopter airplane
and they're keeping you informed

hello antenna the weather is pleasant
even though it's winter and the ducks have to petal
to keep the water water
and their minds off the cold
you told me that there is no such thing as bad weather
it's not the winter that is freezing but the jacket that is thin
you told me that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree
and i wish I had your eyes because they are so very pretty
pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty

I hope you like this song
because i could not find a suitable present at the store
Track Name: Sao Paulo
Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo is a big city, a forest of high rises
stretches to the horizon, anxiety in all shades of gray

bullet proof glass, the purse chained to the chair
everyone looks suspicious and the food is so delicious

shouldn't walk in the street but what will my feet do
knock knees under the table that is not stable

shouldn't walk in the street but what will my feet do
they dream of the ocean and of a sky without concrete

iIm staying at a fancy hotel on the 21st floor
the view is spectacular, bossa nova in the bar

everyone tells scary stories, in the lobby smells of cigar
and modernist architecture, the wood is very dark

the doorman's gun is unbuttoned, his finger is on the trigger
we are drinking caipirinhas and my fear is getting bigger

shouldn't walk in the street but what will my feet do
knock knees under the table that is not stable

shouldn't walk in the street but what will my feet do
they dream of the ocean and of a sky without concrete

politicians are running off with money and the woodwork in the lobby
was once in another part of the country a lovely tree

you could be safe in a penthouse with a hard working husband
and a nanny for the kids, a housekeeper to keep the household

great paintings on the wall collecting value as we blink
but you can't leave the house, your legs look pretty in that dress

we can call the helicopter, that's why we work so hard
it will only take a moment and the sky will be ours

and the sky will be ours
Track Name: Lily Bart
Lily Bart

what if I'm like Lili Bart in "The House of
Mirth" -- and iIm lovely decoration in a fancy setting in Manhattan
in a fabulous dress in fatuous hat with feathers
and the lover I'm seeking doesn't understand my desperation
what if my end is doomed is written in a book already
and there is nothing original about the way death comes

oh that book wrecks me like no other
the way you wreck me wreck me wreck me
you are like that stupid Selden never ready
in a study reading your life as if it were in the paper
as if you were a fictional character
as if you were a fictional character

and you might ask why I regard Lili Bart as a
foil -- seeking comfort in an old story
with outdates social conduct etiquette mores and manners
rules of another time and a fashion gone out of style
and I might ask why I'm so hung up on you
with your busy life your frustrations obligations indecision
the timing is never right and it's never meant to be
you can trace the story one misunderstanding at a time
in the book it all makes sense and the suspense
kills me like it kills her in that lonely room
soon you might come around to having insights
but you are only turning the pages of a novel don't you see

oh that book wrecks me like no other . . . .

well I made up my mind and I'm going down like Lili
down ladders and hierarchies and I'm cashing in my money
and if you still want me honey it is too late
for I've left the country I burned the papers
and I'm changing the plot I'm changing the plot
I stole my smile from a poem written in 1914
and if you think that I'm your darling then you didn't read the lines in-between
don't you remember what they taught us at school
our futures where so very promising
and now we are loosing our wits to seizures and seismographs
keeping track of our tremulous insides our fragile uncertainties
trying to predict the outcome of the story
well I know my ending very well
and it goes something like this:
I have a love of my own
and she's going to come for me
Track Name: Mexico
Mexico

there is an act of sabotage, it is impending
I have built houses on quicksand
and ideas on the wings of a fruit fly
we say the word Mexico and we don't mean it
if a map could be the means
if arriving the end

waiting is one strategy, weighing the options another
I prefer eating my food before it gets cold
I prefer burning my tongue to saying the wrong word
of which there are many
and they all start with "y"
these are the possibilities laid out
along the side of your body
we say the word Mexico and we don't mean it
if a map could be the means
if arriving the end

the sky is ambiguous and so am I

you never told me that there were earthquakes in Olympia
I had been looking for a utopia when I was looking into your eyes
not that I didn't find it there, I think I did
but it's on the back of a bird flying south
it's on the back of a bird flying south
when look up I see the weather and that the way up is much further
than the way down I could even say
I'm already there
Track Name: This Is What I Did When I Got Home
This Is What I Did When I Got Home

this is what I did when i got home
from my travels travels to the West
my suitcase didn't make it to the airport
the rest of me got tangled in the clouds
and those parts that made it
are faded with memories
of a complicated nature
the trees and the ocean the ferry boats
everything reminds me of your mouth

this is what I did when I got home
from my travels travels to the West
I went to Tacheles to see Your Heart Breaks
and met a man who called himself Karl Blau
Blau means blue in German but it also
is a synonym for "drunk"
I didn't have a thing to drink but even so
I'm not really sure how I got home home
but those parts that made it
are faded with memories
of a complicated nature
the trees and the ocean the ferry boats
everything reminds me of your mouth

this is what I did when I got home
from my travels travels to the West
I went over to Tomi's place for dinner
and I ate until I thought I had a body
and thought until I thought I thought
and talked until I thought i had a story
and laughed until I thought that I was happy

this is what I did when I got home
from my travels travels to the West
Sibsi took me to the university
and we attended a lecture on "cool"

the history of cool is that it is a construct
a sophisticated survival strategy
when you're cool nothing can hurt nothing can harm you
when you're cool you move up in the hierarchy
coolness is a very male concept
but I wouldn't mind being that poker face
woman casually smoking a cigarette
a woman determined to be free
of the sap they dish up with the romance

if only I could be so cool
but love love love is cruel
and I've watched too many movies
and I watched your eyes eyes eyes

and those parts that made it
are faded with memories
of a complicated nature
the trees and the ocean the ferry boats
everything reminds me of your mouth
Track Name: Super Hero
Super Hero

today I transformed into a super hero
on my red bicycle racing your time of departure
you had left your ticket on my coffee table
and I told you I would be right there I told you I would be right there

and I handed you the ticket just before the doors closed
and the train pulled out of the station taking you with

it is barely six a.m. and I'm rarely awake at this hour
and the sky is so dramatic my eyes are twice their size
to grasp the circumference of what just happened
my hands clasping the bikes handles
my ribs embracing my breath from racing
birds are flying low
as if they are following me
birds are flying low
as if to steal my thoughts

I handed you the ticket just before the doors closed
and the train pulled out of the station taking you with

now I'm alone with the city and with everyone on their way
now I'm alone with my bicycle and its red red rusted
now I'm alone with my sense of speed and my superpowers
now I'm back home counting my knives and my silver dollars

I thought I would go back to bed after my good deed
but I couldn't sleep so instead I turned on the radio
they had captured the bear whose been plundering back yards
and they shot him shot him dead because he was such a threat
to quiet sundays and to rose gardens
to forest walks and to pink babies
to old ladies and to polished cars
and I keep thinking they shot my heart

I handed you the ticket just before the doors closed
and the train pulled out of the station taking you with
Track Name: Susie Asado
Susie Asado

I have such a damn big crush on you
but I'm probably better off starting a choir
with all the women stumbling in my shoes
who've played your songs too much
and we would have a great time singing four part harmonies
and I would get good playing the guitar
every night i'm drinking too much tea, every night drinking too much tea

and if you are wondering
I am Susie Asado, that's the name that was given to me

I have such a damn big crush on you
but I'm probably better off biting my arm
horse around with pillows and other house-hold-objects
with multiple functions they've got multiple functions
and I'll read Dostojewskij and all of Gertrude Stein
words like "bobbles" will be sparks around my eyes
a starfish in my hair and everything will be so literary because

I am Susie Asado, that is the name that was given to me

I have such a damn big crush on you
but I'm probably better off in another room
for I wouldn't want to end in a geographic mess
if you did all but kiss me
and I would surely miss the point of the attraction
that perhaps all I wanted was to be like you
and maybe one day I will be with a starfish in my hair
and I will say

"I am Susie Asado, I am all of Mexico and all of you
if you ask me what I do for money I will open my portmonait
and a song leap out before you've had time to tie your shoes
you might fall in love with me now, but I will not be able to see you
with these lights glaring in my face I only see silhouettes
and I'll say Mexico is "pink melon joy" and that is the end of my set
and in my dressing room I will think of you
in my dressing room I will think of you
and that is the end of that"
Track Name: Ohio Is Not In Ohio
Ohio Is Not In Ohio

perhaps because of the "o" and the geography
perhaps because it is a state as much as a place
this is where I sit and watch the traffic go by
this is where they serve tortilla like they do in Spain

Ohio is not in Ohio it's a word
you can see the "o" in my mouth
Ohio is long ago and right here
you can make up the map as you go

at least that's what I've been doing with scissors and tape
so my country of choice is down the street
I've done away with the oceans between
I've done away with lovers airplanes away

this is not a riddle or meant to mislead you
I have been diagnosed with a trouble in roots
but I know i'm not the only one counting the days
until the expiration of visas or the time of departure

the time of departure to
Ohio is not in Ohio it's a word
you can see the "o" in my mouth
Ohio is long ago and right here
you can make up the map as you go
Track Name: Apocalypse
Apocalypse

lemon drops will cure your mood
they are laced you can trace the word
to my tongue and choose not to believe it
to my book and see that I stole it

take love and turn it which ever way you want
but I will look both ways before crossing the street
with parsley in my right hand like a wedding bouquet
i've always known that i would be ok. right.

I don't care about mispronouncing cheeses
or revealing my lack of background in wines
I will take you even if your feet aren't polished
I will take you for a walk on peacock island

there once was a zoo and there were kings
and all kinds of historical conversations
about who would marry Spain
and how the water would be divided -- divided

take love and turn it which ever way you want
but I will look both ways before crossing the street
with parsley in my right hand like a wedding bouquet
I've always known i that would be ok. right.

now I'm counting my pennies and my ponies
everything is plastic and everything is here to stay
nothing has slipped my mind the way it should
rain, we all know the earth is far to dry

and I will prefer planets to countries
I know soon there will be no where to hide
not even behind a kiss with the curtains drawn
and the lights out or a fade out and that's a fact -- and that's a fact

apocalypse is the word on my lips
