lyrics

Lily Bart

what if I'm like Lili Bart in "The House of
Mirth" -- and iIm lovely decoration in a fancy setting in Manhattan
in a fabulous dress in fatuous hat with feathers
and the lover I'm seeking doesn't understand my desperation
what if my end is doomed is written in a book already
and there is nothing original about the way death comes

oh that book wrecks me like no other
the way you wreck me wreck me wreck me
you are like that stupid Selden never ready
in a study reading your life as if it were in the paper
as if you were a fictional character
as if you were a fictional character

and you might ask why I regard Lili Bart as a
foil -- seeking comfort in an old story
with outdates social conduct etiquette mores and manners
rules of another time and a fashion gone out of style
and I might ask why I'm so hung up on you
with your busy life your frustrations obligations indecision
the timing is never right and it's never meant to be
you can trace the story one misunderstanding at a time
in the book it all makes sense and the suspense
kills me like it kills her in that lonely room
soon you might come around to having insights
but you are only turning the pages of a novel don't you see

oh that book wrecks me like no other . . . .

well I made up my mind and I'm going down like Lili
down ladders and hierarchies and I'm cashing in my money
and if you still want me honey it is too late
for I've left the country I burned the papers
and I'm changing the plot I'm changing the plot
I stole my smile from a poem written in 1914
and if you think that I'm your darling then you didn't read the lines in-between
don't you remember what they taught us at school
our futures where so very promising
and now we are loosing our wits to seizures and seismographs
keeping track of our tremulous insides our fragile uncertainties
trying to predict the outcome of the story
well I know my ending very well
and it goes something like this:
I have a love of my own
and she's going to come for me

Susie Asado Berlin, Germany

Susie Asado lives in Berlin. That is the band, not the poem. The poem is by Gertrude Stein. Yes, there is such a poem. The band is not a poem. It is a band. Josepha writes the songs. She takes this very seriously, as she takes the band very seriously and of course the poem, that is Gertrude Stein very seriously. ... more
